The Carter School is an active member of both the Boston Public Schools’ (BPS) and the Greater Boston community. We participate in numerous BPS events designed to unite our district such as attending student productions (e.g. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration) and participating in local Special Olympic Games. We also take full advantage of our urban neighborhood which provides us with access to immeasurable community-learning experiences. These opportunities allow our students to work on a variety of curriculum objectives including socialization, communication (using augmentative communication), and behavior objectives in numerous settings. These settings include: chain variety stores; MBTA trains and buses; movies; museums; local corner stores; aquariums; restaurants; and US Post Offices. We also join Greater Boston events aimed at including all students such as Boston Symphony Orchestra, Scooperbowl, and Big Apple Circus performances. In addition, we frequently visit Boston landmarks such as The Prudential Center, the gardens of The Southwest Corridor, Copley Square, and Castle Island.
