Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals. The Music Therapy groups at Carter School incorporate a structured but flexible format with familiar and original songs as well as musical improvisations. Activities might include gross motor songs with students imitating movements such as clapping, tapping, reaching, etc. or passing musical instruments with peers. Musical instrument playing also encourages increased fine motor, grasp, sensory stimulation and cause/effect with sounds. Because music touches each person in so many different ways, participation in music therapy offers additional opportunities for learning, creativity and expression.
Art Therapy makes use of each person’s natural curiosity and expression. It builds on an individual’s existing strengths while engaging them in developmental tasks. Art therapy fosters increased independence and competency and enhances self esteem.
